## What is cylinder head resurfacing?

The underside of the cylinder head, called the deck, must be flat and smooth for the head gasket to seal combustion pressure, oil and coolant. Heat from an overheat can bow an aluminum head by a small amount. Resurfacing cuts a very thin, even layer from the deck until it is flat again and has the surface finish the gasket maker specifies, since modern multi-layer steel gaskets need a fairly smooth face.
