## What is crankshaft polishing?

A crankshaft journal is ground to a precise diameter and then finished very smoothly. In service, fine particles in the oil can leave light scratches. Polishing uses abrasive belt or stone to remove a tiny amount of material, just enough to take the edges off those marks and restore the surface finish. It does not change the journal size in a way that needs undersize bearings.

Polishing is also a standard final step after a crank is ground undersize, since grinding leaves a surface too rough for bearings on its own.
