It is part of a ring job, not a separate fix. Piston ring alignment is an assembly step, not a stand-alone repair. Getting this right is part of why a ring job or rebuild seals well and does not burn oil. ## What does piston ring alignment involve? Each ring has a small gap so it can expand with heat. If that gap is too tight, the ends can butt together when hot and scuff the cylinder. Too wide, and pressure escapes. The gap is measured with the ring squared inside its own cylinder using feeler gauges. Orientation matters too. Many compression rings have a dot or mark that must face up. Installed upside down, they can pump oil into the chamber. Finally, the gaps are spread around the piston following the manufacturer's diagram, so the openings do not line up into one leak path. ## Can rings move out of alignment in a running engine? Rings do rotate slowly in service, and the gaps can wander. That is normal and rarely the cause of a problem by itself.
