We are on the north side of town's main east-west road, Foothill Blvd, which is Historic Route 66. The nearest cross street is Central Ave, near Upland's western edge where it meets Montclair and Claremont. In-N-Out Burger is one block west of us, and it is the landmark most neighbors use when they give directions.

Most Upland residents never touch a freeway to get here. From the north side neighborhoods, come down Mountain Ave, San Antonio Ave or Euclid Ave to Foothill Blvd and head west. From the south side of Upland, take Central Ave or Mountain Ave north. From Historic Downtown Upland, Euclid Ave north and then west is the simplest path. Upland driving is a mix that is hard on parts in quiet ways. Foothill Blvd is a long run of traffic signals, so brakes work constantly and transmissions shift up and down all day. Many trips are short: school drop-off, a grocery run, a quick stop on Euclid. Engines that only run a few miles at a time never get fully warm, and batteries never get a full recharge.

Then there is the heat. Summer afternoons in the Inland Empire push cooling systems and AC compressors to their limits, and they shorten battery life. North of the shop, streets climb toward San Antonio Heights and the foothills, and those grades load up the cooling system on a hot day. When the Santa Ana winds blow, dust gets into air filters and cabin filters fast.

Upland also has plenty of commuters. Drivers who take the 210 west toward Pasadena or the 10 toward Los Angeles pile on miles quickly, and their maintenance comes due sooner than the calendar suggests.

Yes. In-N-Out Burger is one block west, which makes it the easiest spot to sit while a short job finishes. Other stores and restaurants line the street in both directions. Local drivers also like the option of walking or getting a ride home and letting the counter call when the car is ready.

Wait or drop-off is decided at intake. A battery test or an oil service often fits a wait. A diagnosis, anything that needs parts delivered, or a long road test usually works better as a drop-off.

Because most Upland trips to us are short, it is tempting to limp the car in. Do not do that if the temperature gauge is in the red or you see steam.
