Diesel fuel pump repair at Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland covers both pumps on most modern trucks: the low-pressure lift pump that pulls fuel from the tank and the high-pressure pump that feeds the injectors. Our ASE-certified technicians measure each side separately so you replace only the pump that failed, and we check the filter for metal debris.
Which diesel fuel pump has failed?
The lift pump, usually in or near the tank, supplies fuel at low pressure. When it weakens, the truck may start fine but stumble or stall on a long climb or while towing. The high-pressure pump, driven by the engine, raises fuel pressure enough to spray through the injectors. When it wears, rail pressure falls behind what the computer asks for, especially under load, and the truck may derate or refuse to start.
A weak lift pump can also shorten the life of the high-pressure pump by starving it. Testing both sides tells us which part is the cause and which is the victim.
What happens if the high-pressure pump sheds metal?
Some high-pressure pumps fail by wearing internally, and the metal particles travel into the rail, lines and injectors. If we find debris in the filter or pump outlet, a pump alone will not fix the truck. The repair may include the injectors, rails, lines and a cleaning of the tank and return system. We show you photos of what we find before you choose.
Our fuel pump repair process
Step 1: Measure low side
Lift pump pressure and volume are checked at the filter housing.
Step 2: Measure high side
Rail pressure is compared to commanded pressure during cranking, idle and load.
Step 3: Inspect the filter
The old filter is cut or drained and checked for water, glitter or dark sludge.
Step 4: Quote the scope
Your written estimate lists the pump and any parts the debris check says must also be replaced.
Step 5: Replace, prime, verify
The pump is installed, the system is primed and pressure is rechecked on a road test.
What's included in diesel fuel pump repair
Included on the work order
- 01Lift pump pressure and volume test
- 02Rail pressure test against commanded values
- 03Fuel filter inspection for water and debris
- 04Pump replacement with new seals and fittings
- 05System priming and leak check
- 06Road test with pressure data
Is a fuel pump repair need-now or need-later?
Need now: call
- Stalling or loss of power on grades or while towing
- Metal debris in the fuel filter
- No-start with low rail pressure during cranking
Need later: book
- A lift pump that is noisier than before but tests in range
- A pressure reading at the low edge of spec with no symptoms
How pricing and timing work
A lift pump job depends on whether the pump sits on the frame rail or inside the tank, which may need to be lowered. High-pressure pump jobs involve more labor and, if debris is present, many more parts. Your written estimate shows every step, and if the scope changes once parts come apart, we stop and ask. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75, with the card at time of service.
Aftercare
Fill up at busy stations and drain the water separator when the light comes on. Replace filters on schedule; see diesel fuel filter replacement. If the pump was starved by air or a pinhole, diesel fuel line repair covers the fix. Our diesel fuel pressure testing page explains how we recheck pressure at later visits.

Frequently asked questions
Can a bad lift pump damage the high-pressure pump?
Yes. The high-pressure pump relies on steady fuel supply for cooling and lubrication. Running it short of fuel speeds up wear, which is why we test the lift pump first.
Why would you recommend replacing injectors with the pump?
Only when we find metal debris. Particles from a failing pump can lodge in injectors and cause another failure soon after. We show you the evidence before recommending the larger job.
Is diesel fuel pump failure covered by a recall?
Some trucks have had fuel system campaigns. Check your VIN on the NHTSA recall site and tell us what you find.
