Should a diesel tank be repaired or replaced?
Straps, hardware, vent lines, filler necks and sending units are replaced individually when the tank itself is sound. A tank with a leaking seam, a puncture or heavy internal rust is usually replaced, because a patch on a fuel tank is rarely a lasting fix. Plastic tanks that have cracked are replaced as well.
Many diesel pickups hold the lift pump and sender in the same module. If the tank is coming down anyway, we check that module and tell you if it is worth addressing on the same visit.

Step 1: Locate the leak
We inspect the tank, seams, fittings and lines on the lift and look for wet spots.
Step 2: Drain safely
Fuel is drained into approved containers and checked for water and sediment.
Step 3: Lower and inspect
The tank comes down so we can see straps, the top surface and the sender module.
Step 4: Estimate
Your written estimate lists each part and whether it is repaired or replaced.
Step 5: Reinstall and verify
The tank goes back up with new hardware as needed, then we refill, prime and leak check.

How pricing and timing work
Tank size, how much fuel must be drained, and whether exhaust or crossmember parts block access all affect the price. Tanks and sender modules may need to be ordered. Arrive with a low fuel level if you can, since it shortens the drain. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75.

Can a diesel fuel tank be welded?
Patching a fuel tank is rarely a lasting fix. When the tank itself is leaking, we usually recommend replacement and explain why on the written estimate.
Why is my diesel fuel gauge wrong?
The sending unit, its wiring or the gauge itself can fail. We test the sender reading before recommending the tank come down.
Is a diesel leak a fire risk?
Diesel is harder to ignite than gasoline, but fuel on a hot exhaust or near wiring is still a hazard, and a slick is dangerous to walk and drive on. Treat any leak as need-now.
