When does diesel injector cleaning help?

Do diesel injector cleaners from the store work?
A quality diesel additive used as directed can help keep deposits from building. It will not repair a worn injector. If symptoms are already noticeable, testing first tells you whether an additive or a repair is the right move.
Will cleaning fix black smoke?
Only if deposits are the cause. Black smoke often comes from a boost leak, a dirty air filter or a leaking injector, so we test before recommending cleaning.
