When is it time for a new headlight bulb?

Halogen, HID or LED: what is different?
Halogen bulbs are the most common and the simplest to replace, and many drivers replace them in pairs so both sides match. HID lamps use a high-voltage ballast and igniter, so a dead HID light can be the bulb or the ballast. We test before choosing. Factory LED headlights are usually built into the housing, so a failed LED often means a housing or module, not a bulb.
Cloudy lenses also cut light output. If the plastic is yellow, headlight restoration may help more than a brighter bulb.

Step 1: Identify the lamp
We confirm the bulb type and access steps for your exact vehicle.
Step 2: Gain access
The battery, air box, liner or bumper cover is removed when the design requires it.
Step 3: Inspect the plug
The connector is checked for browning or loose terminals while it is off.
Step 4: Install and test
The new bulb goes in without touching the glass, and low and high beams are tested.
Step 5: Check the beam
We look at the pattern on a wall and adjust aim if it is off.

How pricing and timing work
The bulb is often the smaller part of the bill. Access decides the labor: some bulbs twist out in minutes, others need the front bumper cover removed. Your written estimate shows both parts and time. If the bulb is fine and the ballast or wiring failed, we stop and explain before going further. AAA members get 10% off parts and labor, up to $75, with the card. Bulbs are commonly done the same day when the board allows.
Aftercare

Frequently asked questions
Should I replace both headlight bulbs at once?
It is common for halogen and HID bulbs, since the second one is often near the end too and the color will match. It is your choice, and the estimate lists it as need-later if the other bulb still works.
Why does my car need the bumper off to change a bulb?
Some designs pack the engine bay so tightly that the housing has to come out. The estimate shows the access steps so the labor makes sense before you approve it.
Can a brighter bulb help me see better?
Only within your car's specification. Higher wattage bulbs can melt connectors and glare at other drivers. Clear lenses and correct aim usually help more.
