Headlight wiring repair rebuilds the connectors, pigtails, grounds and wire runs that feed your low and high beams. Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland takes on melted plugs, corroded terminals and damage left behind by aftermarket LED or HID kits. Our ASE-certified technicians measure voltage drop across the whole circuit, show you photos of the damage, and repair it to the vehicle's design so the lights run bright and steady.
What damage do we see in headlight wiring?
- Melted or fused plugs behind halogen bulbs
- Spliced-in kit wiring with loose connectors and tape
- A green, corroded ground where the harness meets the body
- Lights that dim when the AC fan or turn signal comes on
- Warning messages about a lamp fault on the dash
What about aftermarket LED and HID kits?
Some plug-in kits draw power differently than the factory bulbs and confuse the car's lamp monitoring, which can cause flicker or warning messages. Others were installed with cut wires, crimp taps and extra relays that corrode over time.
We can remove the kit and restore the factory wiring, or repair the kit wiring if you want to keep it. We will tell you if we think the kit itself is the cause. Aimed badly, bright kits also blind oncoming drivers, so we check the beam pattern too.

Our headlight wiring repair process
Step 1: Inspect both sides
We compare the left and right circuits, plugs and grounds and photograph anything melted or spliced.
Step 2: Measure voltage drop
With the lights on, we measure voltage lost on the power and ground sides to find hidden resistance.
Step 3: Rebuild the circuit
Plugs and pigtails are replaced with sealed connectors, and grounds are cleaned to bare metal and protected.
Step 4: Check the result
We confirm steady voltage, clear lamp warnings and check the beam pattern on a wall.

Need-now or need-later?
Need now: call
- A plug that is actively melting or smells hot
- Loose kit wiring near the radiator fan or belts
- Headlights that shut off while driving
Need later: book
- A browned plug on a light that still works steadily
- Old kit wiring that works but is taped instead of sealed
- Mild dimming with high electrical load
How pricing and timing work
Pricing depends on how much of the circuit needs rebuilding and whether kit wiring has to come out. We quote the job in writing after testing, and we stop and ask if we find more. The diagnostic fee is stated at the counter before testing and applies to approved related repair. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75, with their card. Most jobs are done in a day when the board allows.
Aftercare
Keep to the bulb wattage and type your car specifies. If you add accessory lights later, have them wired with their own fuse and relay. Our headlight switch replacement and ground repair pages cover related faults. Call (909) 608-7699 if a warning returns.
Frequently asked questions
Why do headlight plugs melt?
Halogen bulbs run hot, and a terminal that has loosened adds resistance. Resistance creates more heat, which loosens the terminal further. Higher wattage bulbs speed this up. A sealed replacement pigtail with fresh terminals breaks the cycle.
Will you install an LED kit for me?
We focus on repairing and restoring factory lighting. If you bring a kit, we can discuss it at intake, and customer-supplied parts are inspected first, carry no warranty on the part, and are billed at book labor time.
Is headlight wiring repair different from a wiring fix?
Our headlight wiring fix page is about finding why a light is dead after a bulb swap. This repair covers rebuilding damaged connectors, grounds and kit wiring across the circuit.
