Rust repair at Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland covers the light, early kind: bubbling paint at a wheel lip, surface scale on a bracket, a spot under a leaking battery tray. We clean it back to solid metal, treat it and seal it so it stops spreading. Rust that has eaten through a structural part is a different job, and we tell you that plainly. You get a written estimate before any grinding starts.
What does rust that needs attention look like?
- Paint bubbling along a wheel arch, door bottom or tailgate edge
- Orange streaks running down from a trim clip or badge
- Flaking scale on a battery tray, radiator support or hitch bracket
- A soft or crunchy spot when you press a rocker panel
Is it surface rust or structural rust?
Surface rust sits on metal that is still thick and sound. We clean it to bare steel, treat it and seal it, which stops the spread on a small area. Our auto body repair page covers the light panel work that often goes with it.
Structural rust has thinned or holed a part that carries load: a frame rail, a subframe mount, a strut tower. That is not a light body job. We photograph it, explain what we found, and point you to the right kind of repair, including a frame damage inspection if the vehicle needs a fuller look first.
Our rust repair process
Step 1: Inspect and probe
A technician checks the spot and the metal around it with a pick to find where solid steel begins.
Step 2: Photograph and estimate
You get photos and a written estimate that separates surface work from anything structural.
Step 3: Clean to bare metal
We remove scale and loose paint until the steel underneath is clean and firm.
Step 4: Treat and seal
The area is treated, primed and sealed so moisture cannot reach the metal again.
Step 5: Final check
Any other rust we saw goes on the repair order.

How pricing and timing work for rust repair
Rust is priced by how far it goes, which shows only once the loose layer is off. So the written estimate names the area, the method and a limit. If cleaning reveals thin metal beyond that limit, we stop and call you before going further. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75, when they show the card at time of service. Small spots can often be done in a day when the board allows; call before you drive over.
Aftercare after rust treatment
Keep the area clean and check it when you wash the car. Clear leaves out of cowl and door drains so water does not sit in the same places. If new bubbling shows up near the repair, bring it back and it goes to the front of the line.

Frequently asked questions
Do you do full rust restoration and repainting?
No. We handle light surface rust and small treated areas in-house. Large rust-through, panel replacement and full refinishing go to a collision or restoration shop, and we explain that honestly after we look at it.
Why does my car have rust if I live in Upland?
Usually the car spent years somewhere with salt or coastal air, or water sat trapped in a drain or seam. Dry weather slows rust but does not reverse it.
Can rust affect a pre-purchase inspection?
Yes. Rust on the frame or suspension mounts can be a reason to walk away. Our pre-purchase inspection includes underbody photos of the frame so you can see it yourself.
