The brake pedal switch tells your car the pedal is pressed. It turns on the brake lights and also talks to the shift interlock, cruise control, push-button start and stability systems. What does the brake pedal switch control?
Depending on the vehicle, the switch signal feeds:
- Brake lights, including the high-mounted third light
- The shift interlock that lets you move out of park
- Cruise control cancel
- Push-button start, which often needs a pressed pedal
- Stability control, ABS logic and engine computers
What are the signs of a bad brake light switch?
Brake lights that stay on overnight can drain the battery, and a driver behind you may not know when you are really stopping. Lights that never come on invite a rear-end crash. Other signs include a shifter stuck in park, cruise that will not engage or drops out on its own, and a stability or ABS warning light.

Our brake pedal switch repair process
Step 1: Confirm the symptom
We check all brake lights with the pedal up and down, and test the shifter, cruise and start behavior.
Step 2: Scan
Modules are scanned for brake switch codes and live pedal status data.
Step 3: Test the circuit
Fuses, power, ground and switch output are checked with a meter, along with bulbs or LED lamps.
Step 4: Check the mounting
The pedal stop bumper and switch position are inspected.
Step 5: Replace and calibrate
After approval the switch is replaced and set, with a relearn done if your vehicle requires one.

Aftercare

Frequently asked questions
Can a brake light switch keep my car from starting?
On many push-button start cars, yes. The car needs to see the brake pedal pressed before it will crank. A failed switch can make the car act as if your foot is off the pedal.
Why are my brake lights on when the car is off?
The switch may be stuck closed, or the pedal stop bumper may be missing so the switch never gets pushed. Either can drain the battery overnight.
Is driving with brake lights out a need-now repair?
Yes. The driver behind you cannot tell you are slowing, so we treat it as need-now.
