TLDRDebris hides in the gap between condenser and radiator. We clean it gently and check for internal clogs that cleaning cannot fix.

The radiator core is the thin grid of tubes and fins that sheds heat into the air. Dust, bugs, leaves and road grime pack into it, especially in the gap between the AC condenser and the radiator, where you cannot see. Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland cleans the outside of the core without bending fins, then checks for internal blockage so you know whether cleaning is enough.

What are the signs of a dirty radiator core?

  • Temperature creeps up on hot days and on grades
  • AC gets weaker in slow traffic
  • Visible debris behind the grille
  • Fan runs longer than it used to
  • Vehicle driven on dirt roads, near fields or in windy, dusty areas

Is the blockage outside or inside?

Outside debris blocks airflow. It builds up from Inland Empire dust and Santa Ana winds, and it hides between stacked coolers. We reach it by removing the grille or shroud where needed, then use low-pressure air and water from the engine side out, so dirt leaves the way it came in. High pressure bends fins and makes things worse.

Inside blockage comes from old coolant and scale. An infrared scan across the core shows cold spots where tubes are plugged. Most modern radiators have plastic tanks and cannot be opened to clean the tubes. If we find cold spots, the written estimate explains whether a radiator core replacement is the honest fix.

Our core cleaning process

  1. Step 1: Look and scan

We inspect the front and back of the core and take infrared readings for cold spots.

  2. Step 2: Open the gap

The grille, covers or shroud are removed where needed to reach the space between coolers.

  3. Step 3: Gentle clean

Debris is blown and rinsed out at low pressure, from the engine side toward the front.

  4. Step 4: Recheck

The core is inspected for bent fins, and a hot idle with the AC on confirms airflow.

What's included in radiator core cleaning

Included on the work order

5 lines
  1. 01Visual inspection of both sides of the core
  2. 02Infrared scan for internal cold spots
  3. 03Low-pressure cleaning between the condenser and radiator
  4. 04Fin straightening where practical
  5. 05Hot idle and AC airflow check

When does a dirty core need attention?

Need now: call

Safety or strand risk
  • Overheating tied to blocked airflow
  • Large cold areas on the infrared scan
  • Debris touching the fan or belt

Need later: book

Can be scheduled
  • Light dust on the front of the core
  • A few bent fins with normal temperatures

How pricing and timing work

Cost depends on how much must come off to reach the gap. Some vehicles are open and easy. Others need the bumper cover removed. The written estimate lists each step. Cleaning is usually a same-visit job when the board allows. If the AC condenser also needs attention, AC condenser coil cleaning is quoted separately.

After the cleaning

If you drive near fields or on dirt, check the grille area every few months. Do not use a pressure washer on the fins. If the gauge still climbs, call (909) 608-7699 and we will look at the next likely cause.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hose off my radiator at home?

A gentle rinse from a garden hose is fine. A pressure washer can fold the fins flat, which blocks more air than the dirt did.

Will cleaning fix an overheating problem?

It fixes overheating caused by blocked airflow. If the core is plugged inside or another part has failed, cleaning helps but does not solve it.

Does core cleaning help my AC?

Often, yes. The condenser shares airflow with the radiator, so clearing the gap helps both. AC repairs still include a leak test before any recharge.
