A fan clutch connects a belt-driven radiator fan to the engine and decides how hard the fan spins. It is common on rear-wheel-drive trucks, SUVs and vans. When it slips, the engine runs hot at low speed or on a grade. When it locks, the fan roars and fuel economy drops. Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland tests the clutch at temperature and replaces it with the fan checked too.
What are the signs of a bad fan clutch?
- Temperature climbs while towing up the Cajon Pass, then drops on the flat
- Gauge rises in stop-and-go traffic but is fine at freeway speed
- AC blows warmer at idle on hot days
- A loud roar from the engine that never quiets down after warm-up
- Oily streaks on the clutch body or a fan that wobbles
How do we test a fan clutch?
A spin test with the engine off tells us a little: a clutch that freewheels many turns cold is suspect, and a wobbling fan points to a worn bearing. The real test happens hot. We bring the engine to temperature and use a non-contact tachometer or a scan tool to compare fan speed to engine speed. A healthy clutch engages firmly once the air behind the radiator is hot.
Newer trucks use an electronically controlled clutch, which the engine computer commands. We read the commanded and actual fan speed and check the wiring before condemning the clutch. For electric fans instead, see cooling fan service.
Our fan clutch repair process
Step 1: Hot test
Fan speed is measured at operating temperature and compared with what the clutch should do.
Step 2: Check the fan and belt
Blades are checked for cracks, and the belt and pulley bearing are inspected, since they drive the clutch.
Step 3: Replace
The clutch is removed from the water pump or fan pulley, and the new clutch and fan are fastened to spec.
Step 4: Verify under load
A road test with AC on and a hot idle confirm that temperature holds steady.
What's included in fan clutch repair
Included on the work order
- 01Hot engagement test with speed readings
- 02Fan blade, belt and pulley inspection
- 03Replacement fan clutch, with fan blade if quoted
- 04Wiring and command check on electronic clutches

Is a bad fan clutch urgent?
Need now: call
- Overheating while towing or climbing
- A fan that wobbles or has a cracked blade
- Clutch leaking fluid with rising temperatures
Need later: book
- Slightly louder fan noise with normal temperatures
- Minor free spin with no heat complaints yet
How pricing and timing work
Price depends on whether your vehicle uses a mechanical or electronic clutch, and on whether the fan blade needs replacing too. Some trucks need the shroud unbolted for access. The diagnostic fee is stated at the counter before testing and applies to approved related repair. Most clutch jobs are done the same day when the board allows.
After the repair
Expect more fan noise for a minute after a cold start. That is the new clutch doing its job and then releasing. If you tow, use the free towing inspection at our U-Haul counter for the hookup, and book a normal paid inspection for the truck's own cooling before a long trip.

Frequently asked questions
Should the fan clutch be replaced with the water pump?
Not automatically. On many trucks the clutch threads onto the pump shaft, so both are exposed together. If your clutch tests weak or has high miles, we will point that out on the estimate.
Can I replace a fan clutch with an electric fan?
Conversions exist, but they change how the engine is cooled and are not something we recommend for a work truck or a tow vehicle. We repair what the vehicle was designed with.
Why is my truck fine on the freeway but hot in town?
At speed, air rushes through the radiator on its own. At low speed, the fan has to pull that air, and a slipping clutch cannot.
