The fan shroud is the plastic housing around the radiator fan. It makes the fan pull air through the whole radiator instead of just the middle. Why does the shroud matter so much?
Without a shroud, a fan pulls air mostly from the area right in front of its blades and from around the edges. The corners of the radiator get little airflow. The shroud is mounted so the fan sits centered with even clearance around its tips.
Step 4: Hot idle check

How pricing and timing work
On vehicles with electric fans, the shroud is often part of the fan assembly, which can change the cost. On belt-driven fans, the shroud is usually a separate part. Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to drive without a fan shroud?
For a short trip in cool weather, often yes. In summer traffic or when towing, the engine can run hotter without it, so it should be replaced before heavy use.
Can a cracked shroud be glued?
Glue rarely holds on hot, vibrating plastic. A bracket kit can fix a broken tab, but a crack across the body usually means replacement.
Why does my new fan still tick?
The shroud may be off-center or a mount may be loose. We check clearance all the way around the blade to find the contact point.
