Why does a diesel air filter matter?
Dust that slips past the filter sandblasts the turbo compressor wheel and scours cylinder walls. The damage is quiet and slow, so owners rarely notice until oil use climbs or the turbo whines. A restricted filter causes a different problem: the engine cannot breathe, boost falls and black smoke appears on hard pulls.
The filter is only part of the story. A cracked duct, a loose clamp or a warped housing seal lets unfiltered air in behind it.
When is a diesel air filter due?

Our air filter replacement process
Step 1: Read the indicator
We note the restriction indicator reading before touching the filter.
Step 2: Inspect
The old filter, housing seal and clean-side duct are checked for dust trails.
Step 3: Clean and replace
The housing is wiped out and a filter that meets spec is installed and seated.
Step 4: Check ducts
Clamps and ducts to the turbo are checked for cracks and tightness.
Step 5: Reset
The indicator is reset, and the service is recorded.

Can I clean and reuse a diesel air filter?
Most paper filters should be replaced, not blown out, because compressed air can open holes in the media. Follow your maker's guidance.
How often should a diesel air filter be changed?
Use the restriction indicator and the maker's interval together. Dusty work can mean much shorter intervals.
Will a new air filter improve power?
If the old one was restricted, yes, power and smoke often improve. A filter that was not restricted will not add power.
