At Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland, diesel engine tuning means a tune-up that brings your truck back to the way the factory built it. There are no spark plugs to swap, so a diesel tune-up focuses on filters, glow plugs, injector balance, valve lash and a clean scan. Our ASE-certified technicians do not install performance programming or change emissions settings, and every step is on a written estimate.
What does a diesel tune-up actually do?
A gas engine tune-up centers on spark plugs and ignition. A diesel has neither, so the tune-up is about the three things a diesel needs: clean fuel at the right pressure, plenty of clean air, and enough heat to light off. Over time filters load up, glow plugs weaken, injectors drift and valve clearances change. Each one takes a little power and smoothness away until the truck feels tired.
The goal is to measure those items, fix what is out of spec and give you a list of what can wait.
Do we offer performance tuning?
No. We do not install aftermarket programmers, custom calibrations or anything that changes emissions controls. Those changes can be illegal on California road vehicles and can shorten the life of the engine and transmission. If your truck already has aftermarket programming, tell us at intake so we can explain what we can and cannot work on.
Our diesel tune-up process
Step 1: Scan and baseline
We scan all modules and record injector balance, boost and fuel pressure.
Step 2: Filters
Air and fuel filters are inspected and replaced if due, and the water separator is drained.
Step 3: Starting system
Glow plugs and the battery are tested for cold-start health.
Step 4: Lash check
Valve clearance is checked on engines with a scheduled adjustment.
Step 5: Road test and report
A road test confirms the result, and your findings list sorts need-now from need-later.

How pricing and timing work
The price depends on which items are due on your engine and how many filters it uses. Tests and inspections are listed separately from parts, so you can approve what you want. Most tune-ups fit into a drop-off day when the board allows. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75, with the card at time of service.
Aftercare

Frequently asked questions
Will a tune-up give my diesel more power?
It can restore power lost to clogged filters, weak glow plugs or drifting injectors. It will not add power beyond what the factory built, and we do not install programmers.
How often does a diesel need a tune-up?
Follow the filter and lash intervals in your owner's manual. Many owners pair the inspection with every other oil change.
Can you remove an aftermarket tuner?
