A belt alignment check measures whether every pulley on the front of the engine sits in the same plane, so the accessory belt runs straight. ASE-certified technicians use a straightedge or laser tool, check brackets and bearings, and write up what is off before any parts are replaced.
Signs of a pulley out of line
- Chirping that a new belt did not fix
- Fraying or shiny wear on one edge of the belt
- A belt that rolled or jumped off at idle
- Rubber dust built up on one side of a pulley
- Noise that started after an alternator, compressor or pump was replaced
What knocks pulleys out of line?
The common causes are a replacement accessory with a pulley that sits at a slightly different depth, a bracket bolt that was not seated, a bent bracket from a past accident, and a worn bearing that lets a pulley tilt. Engine mounts that have sagged can also twist the engine enough to matter on some layouts. We check each possibility rather than fitting another belt and hoping.

Step 1: Inspect the belt
Wear pattern and rib condition point to where the problem sits.
Step 2: Check each pulley
A straightedge or laser line runs across pulley faces to find one out of plane.
Step 3: Check bearings and brackets
Belt off, each pulley is spun and rocked, and brackets are checked for fit.
Step 4: Correct and report
Loose or misfit parts are corrected or quoted, then the belt runs under load.

Aftercare

Frequently asked questions
Is a belt alignment check the same as a wheel alignment?
No. This check is for the pulleys on the front of the engine. Wheel alignment is a suspension service; for that we inspect tire wear and suspension, arrange the alignment and road-test the result.
Why does my new belt still squeal?
A new belt on a misaligned or worn pulley will squeal and wear fast. The belt was often not the root cause. The alignment check finds the pulley or bracket responsible.
Can belt dressing spray fix the noise?
It can quiet a belt for a short time, but it attracts dust and can make belts slip. We do not recommend it as a fix.
