How do you know it is time to replace a serpentine belt?
Older rubber belts cracked as they aged, which made the call easy. Today's belts use a harder compound that loses material from the ribs instead. The belt can look fine and still slip under load, especially when the AC is running hard on a hot Upland afternoon.
We check rib depth with a wear gauge that sits in the grooves. If the gauge sits flush, the belt is worn out. We also look for pilling, where rubber balls up in the grooves, and for uneven wear that points to a pulley problem.

On many engines the belt is right at the front and the job is quick. On some transverse engines, the belt threads around an engine mount, and that adds real labor. Aftercare

Frequently asked questions
Should I replace the tensioner with the serpentine belt?

Can I drive with a worn serpentine belt?
A worn belt that still grips can usually wait a short time. A belt that is slipping or missing ribs can let go without warning, and on most engines that also stops the water pump. We label it plainly on your estimate.
Does the serpentine belt run the water pump?
