What are the signs of a failing water pump?
- Coolant drips or crusty residue below the front of the engine
- A whine or grinding that rises with engine speed
- Temperature gauge climbing on the Cajon Pass or the 57 grade
- A pump pulley that wobbles when the engine is off
Why does it matter how your pump is driven?
Some pumps bolt to the front of the engine and run off the accessory belt. Those are usually the simpler jobs. Others sit behind the timing cover and are turned by the timing belt or chain. On those engines, a leaking pump can soak the belt and ruin it, so we often quote the pump and a timing belt replacement together.
Our water pump repair process
Step 1: Pressure test
We pressurize the cooling system and look for the leak source with the engine cold and then warm.
Step 2: Check bearing and drive
We check the pump shaft for play and look at the belt, pulley and any timing components that share the drive.
Step 3: Replace the pump
The pump and gasket are replaced, mating surfaces are cleaned, and bolts are torqued to spec.
Step 4: Refill and bleed
We fill with the coolant your vehicle specifies and bleed out trapped air so the engine does not run hot.
Step 5: Heat cycle and road test
The engine runs to full temperature, the fans are checked, and we road test before release.

How pricing and timing work
Belt-driven pumps on the front of the engine are often done in a day when the board allows. Timing-driven pumps take longer, and some engines need a two-technician lift or special tools, which we explain before the clock starts. AAA members get 10% off parts and labor, up to $75. If the pressure test shows more than one leak, we stop and ask before adding work.
Aftercare
Check the coolant reservoir cold for the first few days. A small drop as the last air works out is normal. A steady drop is not, so bring it back. If you want the whole system looked at, our cooling system inspection covers the radiator, hoses and cap.
Frequently asked questions
Can a water pump be repaired instead of replaced?
Modern pumps are sealed units, so a leak or bad bearing means a new pump. What we can repair is everything around it: a warped mounting surface, a damaged pulley or a leaking hose connection. We only quote a pump after testing, and the water pump inspection page explains that check.
How long can I drive with a leaking water pump?
A slow weep can last a while if you watch the level. An active drip can empty the system on one hot drive. If the gauge climbs, pull over and shut the engine off. We accept tow-ins, which is cheaper than a warped cylinder head.
Why replace the thermostat with the water pump?
It is not required. On some engines the thermostat sits beside the pump and the coolant is already drained, so doing both saves labor. We list it as its own line.
