Engine block resurfacing cuts the top of the block, called the deck, flat again so a new head gasket can seal. When does a block deck need resurfacing?

Why measure before resurfacing?
Removing metal changes geometry. Take too much and the pistons sit closer to the head, which can change compression or cause contact on some designs. So we measure first and resurface only when the deck is out of spec or damaged.
We check the head too, because a flat block does no good under a warped head. That half of the job is covered on cylinder head resurfacing. The goal is two flat surfaces and a gasket matched to the final thickness.
Our block resurfacing process
Step 1: Tear down and clean
The head comes off and the deck is cleaned to bare metal.
Step 2: Measure the deck
Straightedge readings are taken lengthwise, crosswise and diagonally and recorded.
Step 3: Resurface as approved
The deck is cut flat to the finish the gasket calls for; your written estimate shows every step.
Step 4: Clean passages
Oil and coolant passages and bolt holes are cleaned so no debris stays in the engine.
Step 5: Reassemble
A gasket suited to the final deck height goes on and head bolts are torqued in sequence.

Watch the temperature gauge and coolant level closely for the first few weeks. Drive gently for the first few hundred miles if the estimate says so. Any coolant loss or overheating is a reason to call right away.
