Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland diagnoses and repairs engine oil pumps, starting with a mechanical pressure test that proves whether the pump is really at fault. A red oil light or a gauge near zero can come from a bad sensor, low oil, a clogged pickup or worn engine bearings, and the pump is the expensive guess. If the pump is the problem, your written estimate shows every step needed to reach it.
What should you do if the oil pressure light comes on?
Pull over safely and shut the engine off. Check the dipstick after the engine has sat for a few minutes. If the oil is low, add the correct grade and see whether the light stays off. If the level is fine and the light stays on, or you hear knocking, do not drive it. Call (909) 608-7699 and arrange a tow. An engine running without pressure can ruin its bearings in a very short distance.
How do we test before blaming the pump?
The oil pressure sensor is removed and a mechanical gauge is threaded into its port. We read pressure cold, hot at idle and at higher engine speed, and compare the numbers with the maker's spec. A good mechanical reading alongside a warning light points to the sensor or wiring, which our diagnostics and inspections team can trace.
Low readings lead to the next questions. Is the oil the right viscosity? Is the filter correct? Is the pickup screen plugged? Are the crankshaft bearings so worn that no pump could keep up? The pump is replaced only when the evidence points to it.
There are general figures behind those readings. A long-standing rule of thumb expects roughly 10 psi of oil pressure for every 1,000 rpm, and many engines are specified somewhere around 10 to 20 psi at a hot idle and 40 to 60 psi at cruising speed. Engines with variable-displacement pumps deliberately run differently. That is why the mechanical gauge reading is compared with your engine's published specification, which is the only figure that decides whether a pump is at fault.
Where is your oil pump, and why does it matter?
Some engines hang the pump inside the oil pan, driven by a chain or gear. Many build it into the front timing cover, turned directly by the crankshaft. Others combine it with a balance shaft module. A pump in the pan can be a moderate job; a front-cover pump may mean removing the timing belt or chain. Newer engines may use a variable-displacement pump with an electric control valve, which adds a diagnostic step. Chain-driven designs are covered on oil pump drive chain repair. Access is the biggest factor in the estimate.
Our oil pump repair process
Step 1: Verify pressure
A mechanical gauge test compared with the maker's spec, plus a check of oil level and type.
Step 2: Rule out simple causes
Sensor, wiring, filter and pickup screen are checked before the pump.
Step 3: Written estimate
You get an estimate for the pump, access labor, gaskets and anything that has to come off.
Step 4: Replace and prime
The new pump goes in with new seals, and the system is primed so the engine never starts dry.
Step 5: Confirm and road-test
Pressure is read again with the gauge, then we road-test and look for leaks.
What's included in oil pump repair
Included on the work order
- 01Mechanical oil pressure test
- 02Sensor and pickup screen checks
- 03New oil pump and related gaskets or seals
- 04Pickup tube O-ring where used
- 05Oil system priming before first start
- 06Fresh oil and filter
- 07Post-repair pressure reading and road test
Is low oil pressure a need-now repair?
Need now: call
- Low mechanical pressure at hot idle
- An oil light on together with knocking
- Metal flakes on the pickup screen
Need later: book
- Pressure within spec but at the low end, rechecked later
- A warning light traced to a sensor, scheduled as its own repair
How pricing and timing work
Access is everything. A pan-mounted pump and a front-cover pump behind a timing chain are very different jobs, and some vehicles need two technicians to support the engine, which we explain before the clock starts. The diagnostic fee is stated at the counter first and applies to the approved repair. AAA members get 10% off parts and labor, up to $75, with the card at the time of service. If the pressure test points to a sticking valve, see pressure relief valve repair.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my oil pressure light on?
Low oil level is the most common reason, followed by a failing pressure sensor. A worn pump, plugged pickup or worn bearings are less common but more serious. Stop driving, check the oil, and let us test with a mechanical gauge.
Will thicker oil fix low oil pressure?
It can raise the reading while hiding the real cause. We do not recommend it as a fix. Use the viscosity in your manual and find out why pressure is low.
Should the timing chain be replaced with the pump?
If the pump sits behind the timing cover and the chain, guides or tensioner are worn, doing them together saves paying for the same access twice. We show you their condition and let you decide.
