The pressure relief valve caps how much pressure the oil pump can build. Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland repairs relief valves that stick open, which causes low pressure, or stick closed, which causes very high pressure that can blow out a filter seal. We test with a mechanical gauge, inspect the plunger and spring, and clean or replace them so a sticky valve does not lead to an unneeded pump.
What does the relief valve do?
An oil pump moves more oil as engine speed climbs. Without a limit, pressure would rise high enough to burst filters and strain seals, especially with cold, thick oil. The relief valve is a spring-loaded plunger in the pump body, front cover or filter adapter. When pressure passes its set point, it opens and routes the extra oil back to the pump inlet or the pan.
Stuck open or stuck closed: what are the signs?
The symptoms depend on which way the valve sticks.
- Stuck open: low pressure at every speed and an oil light that flickers at idle
- Stuck open: pressure that barely rises when you rev the engine
- Stuck closed: a gauge pinned high on a cold start
- Stuck closed: a blown-out filter gasket or a swollen filter can after a cold morning
- Either way: debris or varnish on the plunger once it is removed
Why do relief valves stick?
A grain of debris or a layer of varnish in the bore is enough to hold the plunger. Long oil change intervals and sludge are the usual causes. A weak or broken spring lets the valve open too early, which reads as low pressure.
A stuck valve can be a sign of wider contamination, so we look at the filter and pan for debris. If we find metal, we explain what it could mean before you decide how far to go. An engine oil analysis can add information.
How we repair a relief valve
Step 1: Gauge test
We record pressure cold and hot at several engine speeds to see which way it misbehaves.
Step 2: Locate the valve
Depending on design, the valve sits in the pump, the front cover or the filter adapter.
Step 3: Inspect plunger and spring
The plunger is checked for free movement, scoring and varnish, and the spring for length and breaks.
Step 4: Clean or replace
Light varnish is cleaned off; scored parts or a weak spring are replaced, or the pump if the valve is not sold separately.
Step 5: Retest
Pressure readings are repeated and compared with spec, then we road-test.
What's included in relief valve repair
Included on the work order
- 01Cold and hot mechanical pressure test
- 02Relief valve removal and inspection
- 03Cleaning or replacement of the plunger and spring
- 04Pump replacement if the valve is not serviceable on its own
- 05Fresh oil and filter
- 06Post-repair pressure readings
How urgent is a sticking relief valve?
Need now: call
- A blown oil filter gasket
- Low pressure at idle with the oil light on
Need later: book
- Slightly low readings we want to recheck after fresh oil
- Varnish noted on a valve that still moves freely
What changes the cost?
If the valve is reachable from outside, for example in the filter adapter, the repair can be modest. If it lives inside a pump behind the timing cover, the access labor matches a pump job, and replacing the whole pump may make more sense. Your written estimate compares the options. AAA members get 10% off parts and labor, up to $75, with the card at the time of service. See oil pump repair for how we test the whole system, and oil filter seal replacement if a filter gasket already blew.

Frequently asked questions
Can high oil pressure really damage anything?
Yes. Very high pressure can push out a filter gasket, split a filter can or strain seals, and a blown filter gasket can empty the engine quickly. It is most likely on cold starts.
Can the relief valve be cleaned instead of replaced?
If the plunger and bore are smooth and only varnished, cleaning often works, and we recheck pressure afterward to prove it. Scoring, a weak spring or a plunger that still drags means new parts or a new pump.
Why did my oil filter blow off on a cold morning?
A stuck-closed relief valve is one cause. A double gasket or a loose filter is more common. We check all of them before the engine runs again. Do not restart it until the cause is found.
