What are signs of a linkage that needs adjusting?

Why does shift linkage go out of adjustment?
Linkage uses rods or a cable with bushings at each end. Bushings wear and crumble with heat, which adds slop. A worn transmission mount lets the transmission move so the setting drifts. Adjustment points can also slip after other repairs.

The neutral safety switch, which lets the car start only in park or neutral, is checked at the same time because it depends on correct linkage position. A car that rolls in park fails our vehicle safety inspection.

Step 1: Check each position
We compare the lever, the indicator and the actual transmission detent in every gear.
Step 2: Inspect bushings and mounts
Worn bushings and mounts are noted, since they cause drift.
Step 3: Adjust to spec
The linkage is set per the service procedure and locked.
Step 4: Test safety functions
We test park lock, starting only in park or neutral, and reverse lights.

How linkage work is priced
An adjustment alone is usually quick. Worn bushings or a bad mount add parts, and each shows on your written estimate. The diagnostic fee is stated at the counter and applies to approved related repair. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75.
After adjustment
Always set the parking brake when you park, especially on Upland's north-side hills. If the indicator drifts again, a bushing or mount is likely moving, and we will look again.
Frequently asked questions
Is it dangerous if my car rolls in park?
Yes. Set the parking brake, avoid parking on slopes, and have it checked right away. We treat it as a safety repair.
Why will my car only start in neutral?
The linkage or the neutral safety switch is out of position. An adjustment often fixes it, and we test the switch at the same time.
Is linkage the same as a shift cable?
