The shift cable links your gear lever to the transmission, and Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland repairs or replaces it when it stretches, binds or breaks. A failed cable can leave the lever flopping with no gear change, or stuck in park. Our ASE-certified technicians check the cable, its end bushings and its brackets, because a crumbled bushing is often the only failed part and costs far less than a whole cable.
What are signs of a failing shift cable?
- The lever moves freely but the gear does not change
- The lever is stiff or catches between positions
- You cannot shift out of park
- The gear indicator and actual gear no longer match
- A rattle from the shifter on rough roads
- The lever feels loose or sloppy
Cable, bushing or bracket: what failed?
Many shift cables snap onto the transmission lever with a small plastic or rubber bushing. Heat makes that bushing brittle, and it falls apart, letting the cable pop off. A new bushing may be all the car needs. A cable with a frayed core or a torn outer jacket binds and must be replaced. Brackets can also crack and let the housing move.

If the lever will not leave park with the brake pressed, a shift interlock or brake switch may be to blame, which we test as part of an electrical system inspection. Stuck in park and need to move the car? We accept tow-ins. A worn transmission mount can also stretch the cable, so we check it too.
Our shift cable repair process
Step 1: Find the failure
The cable, bushings, brackets and interlock are checked in order.
Step 2: Replace the failed part
A new bushing, bracket or complete cable is installed and routed away from heat.
Step 3: Adjust position
The cable is set so each lever position matches the transmission detent.
Step 4: Test safety and gears
We test park lock, start in park or neutral only, and every gear on the road.

How shift cable work is priced
A bushing is a small part and a short job. A full cable can take longer because it runs from the console to the transmission and may need interior panels removed. Your written estimate names which one you need. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75.
After the repair
The lever should feel positive in each position. Always use the parking brake. If the lever gets stiff again, the cable may be rubbing somewhere; bring it back so we can adjust the routing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with a broken shift cable?
Usually not safely. The transmission may be stuck in one gear or unable to hold park. Have it towed in.
Why did my shifter bushing break?
Heat and age make the bushing brittle. It is a very common failure on many cars and can happen without warning.
Do you use a bushing repair kit or a new cable?
If the cable is healthy, a bushing kit is a fine repair. If the cable is frayed or binding, we replace it.
