Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland replaces cracked, torn and hanging bumper covers in-house. What sits behind your bumper cover?
Under the cover, the foam or plastic absorber soaks up low-speed hits and often cracks without showing. The reinforcement bar is the real structure; if it is bent, that is heavier work, and we tell you before going further. Brackets at each corner hold the cover in shape, and they break easily.
Up front, the radiator and condenser sit close behind. Many bumpers also carry parking sensors or a radar unit for driver assistance. If yours does, we flag it on the estimate and explain what the sensor needs after the repair before you approve anything.
Our bumper cover replacement process
Step 1: Remove and inspect
The damaged cover comes off so we can check the absorber, reinforcement and brackets.
Step 2: Estimate every part
The written estimate lists the cover, clips, brackets and any paint step separately.
Step 3: Transfer and fit
Grilles, lamps, sensors and trim move to the new cover, and it is fitted with new retainers.
Step 4: Test and road test
Lamps, sensors and fit are checked, then the car is driven at speed for noise.

What affects bumper replacement cost and timing?
The cover itself, whether it arrives painted or needs paint, sensor count and broken brackets set the price. Covers for common models are often quick to get. The written estimate shows every step, including any paint step and where it happens. AAA members get 10% off, up to $75. If the hit went deeper than the cover, a crash damage assessment sorts the hidden parts first.
Bumper aftercare
Take it easy on parking blocks and steep driveways; approach at an angle. If a parking sensor starts beeping for no reason, come back so we can check its seating. A bumper cover that no longer lines up with the hood may need hood alignment as well.
Frequently asked questions
Can a cracked bumper be repaired instead?
Small cracks away from mounting tabs can sometimes be repaired. Cracks through tabs, or tears near sensors and lamps, usually mean replacement, because the cover will not hold its shape.
Will my parking sensors work after replacement?
We transfer and test them. If your car has radar for driver assistance, we tell you before work what it needs after the repair and put that on the estimate.
Does a new bumper cover come painted?
Some do, many do not. Your written estimate shows whether a paint step is needed and every step involved, before you approve the job.
