What are the signs of a weak battery?

Why is a load test better than a voltage reading?
A battery can show normal voltage at rest and still collapse the moment it has to crank the engine. A load test pulls a heavy current, the way the starter does, and watches how far the voltage falls. That result, compared with the cranking rating on the label, tells us how much strength is left.
We also check the physical side. A loose hold-down lets the battery vibrate, which shortens its life. Corroded terminals add resistance that makes a good battery act weak. A battery that tests fine but keeps dying may point to a charging problem or a parasitic drain, which we track down with battery testing and the alternator performance inspection.
The classic version of that test has accepted numbers behind it. A load tester draws about half the cold cranking amp rating on the label for roughly fifteen seconds, and at ordinary shop temperature a healthy battery is expected to hold above about 9.6 volts through the draw. Cold weather lowers what a battery can deliver, which is why the same battery behaves differently in December. The rating on your battery and your vehicle maker's requirement are what the result is judged against.
