Wiring harness insulation repair fixes the plastic jacket around each wire before bare copper touches metal and causes a short. Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland sees insulation crack from years of Inland Empire heat, from rubbing against a bracket, and from oil soaking. Our ASE-certified technicians find the weak spots, check that the copper underneath is still sound, and seal each conductor so the circuit keeps working. You approve a written estimate first.
How can you tell wire insulation is breaking down?
- Insulation that flakes or crumbles when a connector is unplugged
- Shiny copper showing where a wire crosses a bracket
- A fuse that blows only on bumps or hard turns
- A faint hot-plastic smell after a long climb up the 210
Why does insulation fail on the wires but not the connectors?
Heat is the usual cause. Wires routed near the exhaust, the turbo or the back of the engine cycle from cold to very hot every day, and the plastic hardens over time. Motion is the second cause. A harness that lost a clip can rub through its jacket on the body in a few months.
Oil and coolant leaks make insulation swell and split. That is why we look for the leak too. Sealing the wire without fixing a valve cover leak above it only buys time.
How we repair wiring insulation
Step 1: Find the weak zones
We flex and inspect the harness along heat and rub points and note each spot on the repair order.
Step 2: Check the copper
Where insulation is gone, we look for green corrosion and test resistance to make sure the conductor still carries current.
Step 3: Seal each conductor
Damaged jackets get adhesive-lined heat-shrink one wire at a time, and corroded copper is cut back and spliced.
Step 4: Protect the run
We add heat sleeve or loom and restore clips so the wire cannot rub again.
What's included in an insulation repair
Included on the work order
- 01Inspection of the harness along heat and chafe points
- 02Resistance test on any wire with exposed copper
- 03Individual sealing of each damaged conductor
- 04Heat sleeve or loom where the heat source stays
- 05Photos of the damage and the finished repair
Can cracked insulation wait?
Need now: call
- Bare copper on a powered wire near metal
- Insulation damage that has already blown a fuse
- Soaked wiring under an active fuel or oil leak
Need later: book
- Hard but intact insulation with no exposed copper
- Surface cracks on a wire that is fully inside loom
- Discoloration near a heat shield with no electrical symptoms
How pricing and timing work
The price follows access. A spot on top of the engine is quick; a run behind the dash or under the intake takes longer. Your written estimate lists the areas we will open. If the job has to grow, we stop and ask again. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75, when they show the card at time of service. Many insulation repairs finish the same day when the board allows, so call before you drive over.
After the repair
Get oil or coolant leaks fixed soon so the new seals are not soaked. If you ever see smoke from under the dash, pull over and call (909) 608-7699. A yearly look during an electrical system inspection catches the next weak spot early.

Frequently asked questions
Is electrical tape good enough for cracked insulation?
Not under the hood. Tape adhesive softens in summer heat and lets water wick in. Adhesive-lined heat-shrink bonds to the wire and seals the ends, so it stays put through heat and washing.
Why did my insulation crack on a car that is not very old?
Heat and routing matter more than age. A harness that lost a clip or sits near a hot part can crack early. We look for the cause so the repair lasts. If rubbing wore through the jacket, we also redo the wiring loom.
Can damaged insulation drain my battery?
It can. A wire leaking current to ground through a wet crack can pull the battery down overnight. A parasitic draw test shows whether that is happening.
