EGR valve cleaning removes the hard carbon that makes an exhaust gas recirculation valve stick open or closed. What does the EGR valve actually do?
The EGR valve lets a measured amount of exhaust back into the intake. That cools combustion and keeps the engine from knocking under load.
Short trips up and down Foothill Blvd are hard on it. The engine rarely gets hot enough to burn deposits off, so soot bakes onto the valve seat and the passages behind it.
What are the signs of a carbon-choked EGR valve?
- Rough or shaking idle that smooths out once you are moving
- Pinging or knocking when climbing the 210 or pulling onto the I-10
When is cleaning enough, and when does the valve need replacing?
Cleaning works when the valve body is sound and the electric motor or vacuum diaphragm still moves freely. If the position sensor reads wrong, the diaphragm leaks, or carbon has worn the seat, cleaning only buys a few weeks. In those cases we tell you so and quote a replacement valve instead.

Step 1: Scan and command test
We read codes and command the valve open with a scan tool while watching engine response and position data.
Step 2: Remove and inspect
The valve comes off so we can see the seat, the pintle and the passage behind it, and we photograph the carbon.
Step 3: Clean valve and ports
We break down the deposits, clear the port, and install a new gasket.
Step 4: Relearn and road test
Codes are cleared, the valve is retested under load, and a technician confirms smooth idle on a road test.

The price depends on where the valve sits and how much has to come off to reach it. The diagnostic fee is stated at the counter before testing and applies to approved related repair. AAA members get 10% off parts and labor, up to $75. Many EGR cleanings finish the same day when the board allows; call before you drive over.
Aftercare
If the light returns, bring it back and it goes to the front of the line. Carbon comes back faster on engines that burn oil, so a slow PCV valve replacement or a worn ring set may be the real source.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just spray cleaner into the intake to fix the EGR valve?
Spray cleaners rarely reach the valve seat, and the loosened carbon can end up in a cylinder. Hard deposits need the valve off. If your idle is rough and you are not sure the EGR is the cause, a check engine light diagnosis sorts that out first.
Will a dirty EGR valve hurt my gas mileage?
It can. A valve stuck open leans out idle, and a valve stuck shut brings on knock that makes the computer pull timing. Either way, you feel it most in stop-and-go traffic.
Is EGR cleaning the same as throttle body cleaning?
No. The throttle body meters fresh air coming in, and the EGR valve meters exhaust going back in. Both collect carbon, and both can cause a rough idle, which is why we test before cleaning. See our throttle body cleaning page for that job.
