Throttle body cleaning removes the dark sludge that collects around the throttle plate and bore, where it chokes the small airflow your engine needs to idle. What does a dirty throttle body feel like?

Why do throttle bodies get dirty?
The PCV system routes oil vapor into the intake just behind the throttle. When you shut the engine off, that vapor settles on the plate and bore and bakes into a varnish. Dusty days across the Inland Empire add fine grit if the air filter is loaded or the intake duct has a gap.
At idle the throttle is almost closed, so even a thin ring of sludge makes a real change in airflow. The computer keeps opening the plate a little more to make up the difference, until it runs out of room.
Our throttle body cleaning process
Step 1: Check before cleaning
We scan for codes and look at throttle position and idle airflow data so we know cleaning is the right fix.
Step 2: Inspect the intake path
We check the air filter, the intake duct and its clamps for leaks or dust entry.
Step 3: Clean plate and bore
Using a cleaner safe for coated throttle bodies, we remove deposits without forcing an electronic plate by hand.
Step 4: Relearn and road test
We run the idle or throttle relearn your vehicle specifies, then confirm steady idle with loads on and off.

How pricing and timing work
On most cars this is a short job, but some engines hide the throttle body under plumbing or need a scan tool routine that adds time. If the throttle motor or position sensor has failed, cleaning will not fix it, and we stop and explain the replacement before going further. AAA members get 10% off parts and labor, up to $75. Wait or drop-off is decided at intake.
Aftercare
Idle may feel slightly different for the first few drives while the computer settles. If the surge returns within weeks, the cause is often a vacuum leak or an intake manifold gasket, not the throttle. Frequently asked questions
Can I clean my own throttle body?
On cable-driven throttles, carefully, yes. On electronic throttles, forcing the plate open by hand can damage the motor gears, and many need a relearn afterward. If the idle is still wrong after a home cleaning, the EGR valve or a vacuum leak may be the real cause.
How often does a throttle body need cleaning?
There is no fixed interval. Engines that burn a little oil or do mostly short trips need it sooner. We look at it during tune-up and diagnostic visits and tell you when the deposits are enough to matter.
Will cleaning the throttle body improve power?
It restores normal idle and off-idle response. It will not add power beyond what the engine made when it was clean. If you feel a real loss of power at speed, that points to fuel, ignition or exhaust, and we would test those instead.
