Idle speed adjustment sets how fast your engine turns when your foot is off the pedal. On older engines, a technician turns an adjustment screw. On most modern cars, the computer controls idle, so a wrong idle means something is off: a vacuum leak, a sticky idle valve, or a lost relearn. Can idle speed still be adjusted by hand?
On carbureted engines and some early fuel injection, yes. There is a stop screw or an air bypass screw, and setting it is part of a tune-up. It is done with the engine warm, accessories off, and a tachometer attached.
Most cars from the mid-1990s on do not allow that. An idle air control valve or an electronic throttle sets the idle. Turning the throttle stop on those cars often makes things worse. The real fix is finding what pushed idle off target, then running the throttle body cleaning or relearn routine the maker specifies.

Step 1: Read the data

Step 2: Look for leaks
A smoke test finds vacuum leaks that raise idle or make it hunt.
Step 3: Clean or repair
We clean the idle passage or throttle, or replace a failed idle valve, as quoted.
Step 4: Set or relearn
Older engines are set by hand to spec. Newer ones get the idle relearn procedure.
Step 5: Test under load
We check idle with AC, lights, steering and gear engaged, then road test.

A manual idle set on an older engine is short. On newer cars, the time depends on what the testing finds. Aftercare

What is a normal idle speed?
Most warm gasoline engines idle somewhere well under a thousand RPM, and the exact target is set by the maker. Cold engines idle higher for a short time. We compare yours to the target listed in the service data.
Why did my idle go wrong after a new battery?
Many cars store learned idle values in memory. When power is cut, those values reset, and the car may idle rough until it relearns. Some need a scan tool routine. Our battery replacement service includes this where the car needs it.
Can a dirty air filter change idle speed?
Rarely by itself. A heavily clogged filter affects power more than idle. A torn intake duct after the airflow sensor, though, can make idle high and unstable.
