Hybrid system diagnostics find out why a hybrid shows a warning, will not go into ready mode, or runs its gas engine in odd ways. Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland scans every hybrid module, not just the engine, and checks the parts that fail most often, from the 12-volt battery to the inverter cooling loop. Tell us it is a hybrid at intake and we will explain what we can take on. Findings come to you in writing.
What hybrid problems do we diagnose?
- Check Hybrid System or similar warnings on the dash
- Car will not enter ready mode
- Gas engine runs constantly or never shuts off at stops
- Inverter coolant low or an inverter pump warning
Why does a hybrid need a full-module scan?
A basic code reader only talks to the engine computer. A hybrid spreads its work over several modules: hybrid control, battery management, inverter, brakes and more. A warning on the dash might come from any of them. A full-module scan with a capable tool shows which one set the fault and what data it saw at the time.
That is the difference between replacing a guess and fixing the fault. Our general check engine light diagnostics cover gas engines, and this page covers the extra layers on a hybrid.
Our hybrid diagnostic process
Step 1: Intake
You tell us what you notice and when it happens. Tell us it is a hybrid at intake and we will explain what we can take on.
Step 2: Full-module scan
We read codes and freeze-frame data from every module the car reports.
Step 3: Check the common causes
We test the 12-volt battery, check inverter coolant and pump, and check the pack cooling fan and intake.
Step 4: Road test with data
When safe, we drive with the scan tool connected to see the fault as it happens.
Step 5: Written findings
You get the cause, the fix, and need-now or need-later labels before any repair.
What's included in hybrid system diagnostics
Included on the work order
- 01Full-module scan with freeze-frame data
- 0212-volt auxiliary battery test
- 03Inverter coolant level and pump check
- 04Pack cooling fan and intake check
- 05Road test with live data where safe
- 06Written findings and a repair quote
Need-now or need-later?
Need now: call
- A red hybrid or brake warning
- Reduced power or loss of ready mode while driving
Need later: book
- A stored code with no warning and normal driving
- A slightly slow engine restart at stops
How pricing and timing work
The diagnostic fee is stated at the counter before testing and applies to approved related repair. We do not work on high-voltage battery packs, so if a finding points there, we say so plainly and refer it out. AAA members get 10% off parts and labor, up to $75. If the car will not move, we accept tow-ins.
Aftercare
After a repair, the hybrid system may need a few drive cycles to finish its checks. If the warning returns, bring it back and it goes to the front of the line. Keep the battery cooling vent clear, and see hybrid battery service for that upkeep. Open recalls matter on hybrids too, so check the NHTSA recall lookup (opens in a new tab).

Frequently asked questions
Can a regular shop work on hybrids?
Many hybrid repairs are ordinary: brakes, suspension, cooling, oil changes and 12-volt electrical work. Tell us it is a hybrid at intake and we will explain what we can take on. For regular upkeep, see our brake services, which on hybrids also means checking the blended braking system.
Is it safe to drive with a hybrid warning light?
It depends on the warning. A red warning or loss of power means stop when safe and call us. An amber warning with normal driving can usually be driven to the shop. We label it after the scan.
Why won't my hybrid turn on but the lights work?
A weak 12-volt battery is the most common reason. It can run the dome light but not wake the hybrid system. We test it first, because it is quick and often the answer.
