TLDRThe headlight check covers every exterior bulb, beam aim and lens haze, so you see well and other drivers see you.

A headlight check makes sure every exterior light works and your headlights actually light the road. Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland checks low and high beams, aim, lens clarity, brake lights, turn signals and the plate light at each oil change. Most drivers never see their own brake lights, and a burned-out bulb is an easy ticket or a real hazard at night. We note what we find, show you, and quote any fix before doing it.

What lights do we check?

  • Low and high beam headlights on both sides
  • Brake lights, including the center high-mount light
  • Front and rear turn signals and hazards
  • Parking lights, tail lights and the license plate light
  • Reverse lights and fog lights if equipped

Why hazy lenses and poor aim matter

Plastic headlight lenses yellow and cloud in strong sun. A hazy lens scatters light, so the road ahead looks dim even with new bulbs. It is common on cars that live outside in the Inland Empire.

Aim matters too. After a bumper repair or a sagging spring, headlights can point too low to see or too high and blind oncoming traffic on the 210 at night. We do a visual aim check against a flat wall and quote headlight alignment adjustment if they are off.

How the headlight check works

  1. Step 1: Walk around

One person works the switches while another watches each light.

  2. Step 2: Check beam pattern

We look at the beam on a wall for aim and brightness.

  3. Step 3: Inspect lenses

Haze, cracks and moisture inside the housing are noted.

  4. Step 4: Report

Any out bulbs or faults go on the repair order with a quote.

How pricing and timing work

The check is part of your oil change visit. Most bulbs are quick, but some cars need a bumper cover or housing removed, which adds time and shows on your written estimate. See headlight bulb replacement for details. If a new bulb does not fix it, the fault may be in the wiring or relay, covered under headlight wiring repair. Hazy lenses are handled with our auto body and glass services.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my new headlight bulb burn out quickly?

Touching a halogen bulb's glass, a loose connector or voltage problems can shorten bulb life. If a bulb fails early, we check the socket and wiring before installing another.

Should I replace headlight bulbs in pairs?

Bulbs dim with age, so replacing both keeps the light even. It is a suggestion, not a requirement. We quote both options.

Can hazy headlights be fixed without new housings?

Often, yes. Light haze can usually be polished and sealed. Deep cracks or moisture inside the housing may need replacement. We look and tell you which applies.
