Call the seller before you leave. Ask whether the car rolls, steers and brakes, whether the tires hold air, and whether there is flat, open ground for loading. Bring the title paperwork, a tire inflator, a jump pack and at least one helper.

Leave early. Pulling an empty carrier out is easy; bringing a loaded one home through Los Angeles traffic or down the Cajon Pass is slower. In California, keep to 55 mph and the right lanes while towing.

A non-running car has to be pushed and steered aboard by people, so the work depends on enough helpers and a flat spot. The steering must turn and the brakes must work. One person sits in the car to steer and brake, and nobody stands in front of it. If the brakes do not work, do not load it this way; a tow-in to our shop is the safer route.

A car that sat for years, or one bought without an inspection, deserves a careful look before daily driving. Our pre-purchase vehicle inspection is a deluxe inspection: a printed checklist, underbody photos, a full-module scan, a road test, a second sign-off and a written buy-or-walk letter. It cannot predict future failures or see inside sealed components. If you have not bought yet, have it done first. If the car will not start, begin with auto diagnostics.
