If your car just broke down, safety comes before repair. Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland accepts tow-ins during business hours and has an after-hours key drop for cars that arrive when we are closed. This page walks you through the roadside steps, how to get the car to us and how we sort out what has to be fixed now.
What should you do at the roadside?
- Turn on your hazard lights and get as far off the road as you can.
- On a freeway like the 210 or I-10, stay buckled in if you cannot get well away from traffic. Call 911 if you are in danger.
- If the engine is overheating, shut it off and do not open a hot radiator cap.
- Call your roadside assistance plan or a tow company.
- Call us at (909) 608-7699 so we know the car is coming.
How do tow-ins and the key drop work?
During business hours, Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 2 PM, the tow driver brings the car to the lot and we check it in. After hours, the key goes in the after-hours key drop with a note: your name, phone number and what happened. We do not have technicians on site overnight, so diagnosis starts when the shop opens. Read more on after-hours diagnostics.
Our emergency repair process
Step 1: Check-in
We log the car, the key and your description of what happened.
Step 2: Safety triage
A technician looks first at what stopped the car, after the diagnostic fee is agreed.
Step 3: Need-now estimate
You get a written estimate that puts getting you back on the road first.
Step 4: Repair and road test
Approved work is done when the board allows, then checked and road-tested.
What's included in an emergency visit
Included on the work order
- 01Tow-in check-in during business hours
- 02After-hours key drop for off-hours arrivals
- 03Triage of the failure that stopped the car
- 04Written estimate focused on need-now items
- 05Text updates on timing
What counts as need-now after a breakdown?
Need now: call
- A dead battery, failed starter or alternator that left you stuck
- Overheating from a burst hose or failed radiator
- Brake failures or a broken belt that drives the water pump
Need later: book
- Unrelated wear items found during triage
- Maintenance that is due but did not cause the breakdown
How pricing and timing work
An emergency does not change the rules. The diagnostic fee is stated first, and the written estimate comes before repair. Timing depends on the board and parts. Common failures like batteries and belts are often same-day when the board allows; others need a part ordered. We are not open overnight and do not offer roadside service, so plan for the tow.
Aftercare
After a breakdown repair, watch the gauge or warning light that alerted you. If it returns, call right away; comebacks go to the front of the line.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have my car towed to you after hours?
Yes. The tow driver can leave the key in the after-hours key drop with a note. Call us with your name and number, and diagnosis begins when the shop opens.
Do you send a tow truck or come to the car?
No. We do not offer mobile or roadside service. Use your roadside plan or a tow company, and have the car brought to 1775 W Foothill Blvd.
Will you fix my car the same day?
Often, when the board allows and parts are available. We tell you honestly what the schedule can hold and text you if the time changes.
