TLDRWe test protection and additives, check for oil or rust contamination, and tell you in writing if service is due before summer.

A coolant condition inspection at Route 66 Auto Repair in Upland tests what is in your radiator, not just how much. Coolant carries heat away and protects metal from corrosion, and both jobs fade with age. We test its protection level and additive condition, look for oil or rust, and write down whether it is fine, due for service, or pointing to a deeper problem.

Reasons to test your coolant

  • Temperature gauge creeps up in traffic or on a hot afternoon
  • Coolant in the overflow tank looks brown, milky or has a film on top
  • You topped off with a different color than was already in there
  • A sweet smell after driving, with no visible puddle
  • No record of when the coolant was last changed

How do we test coolant condition?

With the engine cool, we draw a sample from the radiator or reservoir. A refractometer or test strip shows the freeze and boil protection the mix provides. Test strips also indicate whether the corrosion inhibitors are still active. Coolant can look fine and still be exhausted, which lets water pumps, heater cores and aluminum radiators corrode from the inside.

We check the sample for oil sheen, rust particles and sludge. Oil in the coolant can point to a failed head gasket or oil cooler. When the signs suggest combustion gas in the cooling system, we can run a chemical block test at the reservoir as a next step. We also note signs of mixed coolant types.

What the coolant report shows

  • Protection level from the refractometer or strip reading
  • Inhibitor condition from the test strip
  • Color, clarity and any oil, rust or sludge
  • Coolant type and signs of mixing
  • Recommendation for a block test when contamination suggests it
  • A photo of the sample when it looks wrong

How a coolant condition inspection goes

  1. Step 1: Cool down

We only open the system when it is safe to do so.

  2. Step 2: Sample and test

Protection and inhibitor levels are measured.

  3. Step 3: Look for contamination

Oil, rust and sludge are noted, with a photo if present.

  4. Step 4: Recommend

You get a written pass, a service recommendation or a next test.

What is urgent in a coolant test?

Need now: call

Safety or strand risk
  • Oil in the coolant, or milky coolant
  • Protection so weak the engine is running mostly on water
  • Heavy rust or sludge that can block the radiator

Need later: book

Can be scheduled
  • Inhibitors near the end of their range with good protection
  • Slight discoloration with a passing test

How pricing and timing work

This is a quick test, and the counter tells you the fee before we begin. Arriving with a cool engine saves waiting time. If service is recommended, the written estimate lists the coolant your vehicle specifies and the labor to exchange it. Contamination findings may need more testing, which we quote before doing. AAA members save 10% on parts and labor, up to $75.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix coolant colors?

Color is not a reliable guide to chemistry, and some types do not mix well. Mixing can cut protection or form sludge. Use the type your owner's manual names, and tell us if you have already mixed.

Why test coolant in a place that never freezes?

Coolant also raises the boiling point and protects against corrosion. In Inland Empire heat, those jobs matter more than freeze protection.

What does oil in my coolant mean?

It can mean a failed head gasket, oil cooler or similar part. It is not a diagnosis by itself. We recommend a follow-up test and give you the cost before running it.
