What are the signs of a dirty engine air filter?

Why does the engine air filter matter?
The engine measures incoming air to decide how much fuel to add. A clogged filter restricts that air, which dulls response, especially on hot days when the air is already thin. A torn or poorly seated filter is worse: it lets grit reach the airflow sensor and the cylinders, where it acts like fine sandpaper.
Modern fuel injection adjusts well, so a dirty filter rarely causes a dramatic loss of mileage. That is why we show you the filter instead of promising results. If the engine has a running problem beyond the filter, engine diagnostics is the next step.
Our air filter replacement process
Step 1: Open the airbox
We remove the filter and look for debris, rodent nesting material and oil in the housing.
Step 2: Show you
We hold the old filter up to the light next to a new one so you can see the difference.
Step 3: Clean and replace
With your approval, we vacuum loose debris from the housing and install a filter that fits your engine.
Step 4: Seal check
We confirm the lid clips and intake duct are tight so no air bypasses the filter.

After a new air filter
There is nothing special to do. If you drive dirt roads, work on job sites or drive through a dust storm, ask us to check the filter at your next visit rather than waiting for the interval. If you add an aftermarket intake, keep the filter oiled only as its maker directs, because extra oil can coat the airflow sensor.

How often should the engine air filter be replaced?

Is the engine air filter the same as the cabin filter?
No. The engine air filter cleans air going into the engine. The cabin filter cleans air coming out of your vents. They are in different places and are replaced separately. See our cabin filter change page for that one.
Can I blow out my air filter and reuse it?
We do not recommend it for paper filters. Compressed air can tear the paper and open holes you cannot see, which lets dirt straight into the engine. Washable filters are designed for cleaning and should be serviced as their maker directs.
