What are the warning signs of a short?

How do we trace a short without guessing?
We never install a larger fuse. Instead we connect a protected test device in place of the fuse so the circuit can be powered safely while we unplug parts and flex wires. When the short goes away, we know which section holds it.
Common causes are chafed wires on sharp metal, water in a connector, a failed motor, and pinched wiring from aftermarket installs. Damage behind panels is photographed before repair. On a hybrid, tell us it is a hybrid at intake and we will explain what we can take on.
Our short circuit repair process
Step 1: Make it safe
The burned fuse is removed and the circuit is checked for heat damage.
Step 2: Power it with protection
A protected test device replaces the fuse so we can trace safely.
Step 3: Isolate the section
Parts are unplugged and wires flexed until the short clears.
Step 4: Repair the cause
The chafed wire, wet connector or shorted part is repaired or replaced, and the run is protected.
Step 5: Confirm
The correct fuse is installed and the circuit is run under load and on a road test.

Is a short circuit a need-now repair?

How pricing and timing work
Tracing time depends on where the short hides. The diagnostic fee is stated at the counter before testing and applies to approved related repair. If tracing runs longer than approved, we stop and call. Repairs go on a written estimate. AAA members get 10% off parts and labor, up to $75, with the card at time of service. Shorts that only happen on the road may need a drop-off.
Aftercare

Frequently asked questions
Can I just put in a bigger fuse?
No. The fuse protects the wire. A bigger fuse lets the wire overheat before anything blows, which can start a fire. Always use the rating shown on the fuse box cover.
Why does my fuse only blow in the rain?
Water is getting into a connector or reaching a wire with worn insulation. We can wet the area in the bay to reproduce it, which helps find the exact spot.
Is a short circuit covered by warranty?
Coverage depends on the part and the repair and is written on the invoice. If the short came from a part we installed, bring it in and it goes to the front of the line.
