A tailpipe that rusts off does more than look bad. When the pipe ends under the car, exhaust can pool beneath the floor and find its way inside, especially in slow traffic. When does a tailpipe need replacing?

Why does tailpipe length matter?
The tailpipe's job is to carry exhaust out into moving air, away from the car. When it breaks off short, the gas exits under the floor. At a light on Foothill Blvd or in a drive-through line, there is no airflow to clear it, and it can seep through body seams and into the cabin. Exhaust carries carbon monoxide, which you cannot smell on its own. The CDC's carbon monoxide guidance (opens in a new tab) lists symptoms like headache and drowsiness.
Pickups and vans often route the tailpipe out the side, ahead of the rear wheel. When that pipe is damaged, the gas can end up right below the cab. We check the exit direction as well as the pipe.
Do you check tailpipe clearance for towing?
Yes. A hitch, ball mount or trailer tongue that sits close to the tailpipe can get hot or block the flow. If you rent a trailer from our U-Haul rentals, the Free Towing Inspection is a free hookup check of the trailer connection, and a new tailpipe should clear the hitch with room to spare.

Frequently asked questions
My tailpipe fell off. Is it safe to drive?
For a short trip with windows open, usually. Avoid idling, drive-throughs and slow traffic, and come in soon. If anyone feels headachy or drowsy, stop and get fresh air.
Can you replace only the tailpipe and not the muffler?
Yes, if the muffler outlet is solid. If the metal there is thin, a new tailpipe will not seal well, so we show you photos and quote both if needed.
Do trucks need a different tailpipe?
