Choose open when the load is dirty, wet, tall or loaded with a shovel. Choose enclosed when it is boxed, valuable, or would be ruined by sun and wind. A mattress can ride on an open deck if it is bagged and strapped flat, but a bedroom's worth of boxes belongs behind walls in one of our cargo trailers.

Sometimes. It depends on the vehicle's towing rating, the hitch installed on it and the trailer you pick. When you book on the U-Haul dealer page (opens in a new tab), you enter your vehicle and the reservation system checks whether the pairing is allowed. The owner's manual lists the rating, and the hitch carries its own label.

Smaller SUVs and crossovers are usually matched with the smaller utility trailers. Load weight matters as much as trailer size here: a 4x7 full of wet soil can outweigh a 6x12 carrying a few pieces of furniture. Soil, rock, concrete and pavers add up fast, so haul them in partial trips.

Yes. The trailer's brake, turn and running lights draw power from a connector at your hitch. If your vehicle has no connector, or the connector is dead, the trailer cannot safely leave the lot. Test the plug at home with a helper or a plug tester before moving day.

If one side is dead, the cause may be a blown fuse, a corroded plug or a broken wire. Our wiring harness repair team can trace it as paid work, with the diagnostic fee stated at the counter before testing.

California law requires loads to be secured so nothing drops or blows out, and on the 10 at freeway speed, loose debris is a real hazard to the drivers behind you.

Call the landfill or transfer station before you load. Many sort green waste, concrete and household junk into separate areas, and some limit trailer loads or close early on weekends. Load in the order you will unload, so the material for the first stop goes on last. Bring gloves, a shovel and a broom so you can leave the deck clean.

Stop-and-go on Foothill Blvd punishes late braking, so leave a longer gap and brake early. Swing wide at right turns so the trailer tires clear the curb. On the 57 or the Cajon Pass, drop a gear on the climb and the descent, and watch your temperature gauge. Crosswinds on the 15 push an empty open trailer around more than you expect. Slow down and keep both hands on the wheel.

The free hookup check covers the connection only. It does not look at your brakes, tires, cooling system or transmission. A heavy open load of soil or pavers works all of them hard, even on a short trip. A paid vehicle safety inspection gives you a written result, and your written estimate labels each item need-now or need-later. If stopping is the worry, go straight to brake services.

Sweep or hose off the deck, raise and latch any ramp or gate, and remove your straps. Park on level ground, unplug the lights, lift the coupler off the ball, and unhook the chains last. Take a photo of the empty deck and your parking spot.
